Nox big bags allow you to store your products in a modified atmosphere: you protect them from risks (insects, mould, humidity, etc.) and increase their shelf life.

Two main gases can be used to create the modified atmosphere: nitrogen and carbon dioxide. Each gas has its own specific conservation characteristics.

Nox is a registered trademark and the Nox process is protected by an international patent.

The Nox big bags have been designed to be completely airtight and have a system of non-return valves, allowing for suction (of air) and injection (of nitrogen/carbon dioxide).

They can hold up to 1 ton of product and measure 91x91x160cm.

The bag consists of two independent layers. The outer layer ensures the strength and stability of the big bag, while the heat-sealable inner layer ensures that it is airtight. The big bags are equipped with four lifting points, a large filling opening and a bottom-welded emptying opening.

Nox big bags can be reused several times (safety factor 6:1), but if the inner layer is punctured, they lose their original purpose of hermetic preservation.

You can store all types of grain, food seeds and seeds.

Nevertheless we recommend:

• not to insert raw product when leaving the field.
• to bring your product up to temperature and humidity standards before packing it in a Nox big bag.

You can keep your products in Nox big bags for several years, provided that the modified atmosphere is stabilized (and maintained) over the period and that the product is healthy when bagged.
It is therefore necessary to regularly check the gas level inside the Nox big bag.

The Nox process allows the creation of a modified atmosphere with a high carbon dioxide content leading to total insect mortality. 

Following conditioning, the adult insects in free form are eliminated after 48 hours. It is necessary to wait up to 21 days to observe the total mortality of the hidden forms and the earlier forms (eggs/nymphs/larvae, possibly nested inside the grains).

The speed of insect removal depends on several parameters (insect, type of grain, temperature, humidity, gas rate).

The elimination of hidden forms is made possible by the diffusion of carbon dioxide throughout the big bag and inside the grain. Without the injection of carbon dioxide the insect control action cannot take place.

If you are using Nox big bags to disinfect already infested batches, you should include an additional sorting step to remove the remains of dead insects left inside.

The modified atmosphere allows you to secure your seeds over several years without using chemical treatment or cold storage. 

Cold germination tests (conducted on several field crop species) show that germination is stabilized.

It is not recommended to store flour under carbon dioxide in Nox big bags for two reasons:

• the gas cannot diffuse inside the flour volume (because there is no free space between the grains);
• the carbon dioxide will acidify the flour.

Yes, modified atmosphere packaging (nitrogen or carbon dioxide) is permitted for organic farming (commission regulation ec 889/2008 of 5 september 2008Annex VIII) and for food use (certificate of food suitability provided for the bag and packaging gas).

On the other hand, no training is required to be able to operate Nox conditioning.

Nitrogen and carbon dioxide are naturally occurring gases in the air we breathe every day (78.08% and 0.04% respectively). They are also already massively used in the food industry for the preservation of food in small packaging (bags, trays, soft drinks, etc.).

Nevertheless, too high a concentration of carbon dioxide in the air breathed in leads to a loss of consciousness in a few seconds and then to asphyxiation. The packaging in big bag Nox must therefore be carried out in ventilated areas.

Carbon dioxide should be handled in large, ventilated rooms. The packaged big bags must then be clearly marked.

Nitrogen and carbon dioxide are neutral gases. They do not react chemically with the preserved product and have no direct effect on the physico-chemical and organoleptic properties.

To condition in Nox, it is necessary to add between 1 and 2KG of food carbon dioxide per big bag.

The Nox process consists of five steps: inflating the big bag, filling, closing the inner bag by heat sealing, sucking out the air inside and then injecting carbon dioxide.

For an experienced user, the operation time is about 10 minutes per big bag Nox.

A 10kg bottle of carbon dioxide can be used to pack between 5 and 10 Nox big bags. The quantity of gas to be injected depends on the type of product to be preserved and its granulometry.

The disinsectisation is optimal when the carbon dioxide level inside the big-bag is maintained between 30% and 50% for at least 21 days.

Three empirical methods allow you to inject the right amount of gas:

• Weigh the gas cylinder before and after injection to determine the mass of gas injected.
• Time the injection time (at constant flow rate) to determine the volume of gas injected.
• Introduce a precise quantity of product to be preserved, then inject the gas until the big bag is fully inflated.

For accurate measurement of carbon dioxide levels, a carbon dioxide analyser should be used, which can be connected directly to one of the valves on the big bag Nox.

Nox big bags should be stored out of the sun and out of the weather. 

Since the product is hermetically sealed, it diffuses less odor and is therefore less detectable by rodents. But bewarettention, the bag remains vulnerable to rodent attacks. 

We do not recommend stacking big bags because of the risk of tearing the inner layer and breaking the seal. Instead, use rigid rack-type structures.

Within a few days of injection, the carbon dioxide present inside the big bag is partly adsorbed by the grain: the gas molecules penetrate deeper and deeper into the grain. This natural and purely physical adsorption phenomenon (no chemical interaction) results in a decrease in the volume of gas available inside the big bag: seen from the outside, the big bag will appear less inflated. 

If you notice that the adsorption phenomenon leads to an under-pressure inside the big bag, gas must be re-injected to rebalance the internal and external pressures.

At the end of the storage period, the desorption phenomenon starts as soon as the big bag is opened and ends in a few hours: all the carbon dioxide molecules are ejected from the grain.

Nox big bags can be reused several times, if they are not pierced .
To prepare for reuse :

1. Cleanly cut the drain chute.
2. Blow out the inside of the big bag.
3. Heat-seal the discharge chute.

Measure the gas level regularly to make sure there are no leaks.
